Would your business benefit from new signage or a fresh coat of paint? Do you need to upgrade your shop front but don’t have the funds?
Grants are available to assist commercial property owners/occupiers to undertake repairs and redecoration to improve the external appearance of business premises.
Copeland Borough Council is passionate about working towards making Copeland a better place to live, work and visit. We plan to invest £500k in our local towns and villages through our Town Centre Regeneration Scheme.
Who can apply?
The scheme is open to owners, landlords and tenants of units that are located within Copeland’s towns and villages, with priority given to the four town centres of Whitehaven, Cleator Moor, Egremont and Millom.
What will the scheme fund?
The scheme will only fund works to improve the external appearance of a commercial property, principally the ground floor trading elevation.
How much can I apply for and will it cost me anything?
Grants are available for 50% of the value of the work required, up to a maximum amount of £5,000. This means that you will have to contribute at least 50% of the total cost.
Will I get the grant before the work starts?
No. The grant will be paid on completion of the work on submission of the required invoice/s.
Will I need planning permission?
Work resulting in a material change to the external appearance of a shop may require planning permission so it is advisable to speak with the council’s planning team prior to completing an application. They can be contacted by email at
firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 01946 59 8300.
Do I need to own the building?
No, however if you are not the owner you will need the owner’s permission.
Can I do the work myself?
Not unless you are a certified tradesperson.
How do I apply?
To apply to the scheme and for more information contact Copeland Borough Council, by email at email@example.com or by calling 01946 598433. Applications will be open from Monday, July 24, 2017.
